It was considered both a critical and commercial success, and won many awards, including Best Actor and Best Actress ofr Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn respectively.

The picture was shot entirely on location in New Hampshire in the summer of 1980, with all interiors filmed at a cottage around Squam Lake.

All exteriors were shot on and around Squam, except for the aerial shot of Billy driving the boat in circles, which was shot nearby on Lake Winnepesaukee.
